Which option did I choose?

What I really wanted was an ultrasonic repelling device. However, the cost was just too far out of my price range. So, I decided to look for a cheaper option, one that would better fit my needs.

I ended up going with the plastic owl. Why? Well, my strawberries were (and are still) my pride and joy. They only need a couple months of protection in the late spring to last until their scheduled June harvest. So, I spent about $40 and ordered a plastic owl online. It’s a gray owl with white (plastic) feathers on its chin. I named the owl “Hal,” because I’d just watched 2001.

At first I was skeptical. I didn’t think a stoic, plastic owl would make any difference whatsoever. It did. Right away, I noticed a decrease in the number of birds that came near my property. As the next June drew closer, I did what I had to do. I went outside every now and then and moved the owl around, to give off the illusion that it was a living, breathing thing. Still, the birds did not come. Score.

Bird control may seem odd if you’ve never owned a garden, but it’s an issue worth taking seriously. It’s amazing how quickly those seemingly cute creatures can destroy an entire strawberry patch. My fake owl solved my problem though. Whenever Hal stands guard, the birds stay away.

I still share my strawberries with the neighbors, but I no longer share with the wildlife.
